Itching and Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia ItchingOne of the symptoms associated with Fibromyalgia is itching, scratching, burning or a general irritation of the skin.  As with all symptoms of  Fibromyalgia the extent to which each individual will suffer with each symptom, differs greatly from person to person.  If you have the Fibromyalgia Itch, or to give it its correct name, sensory itch, then you might not have floaters or another symptom.

The Fibromyalgia Itch can be a very hard symptom to cope with.  Mainly because if you are itching at night, you probably can’t get to sleep.  It’s bad enough that you are struggling to get the deep restorative sleep that your body needs to heal and restore itself, but to have another symptom keeping you awake just tops it!

WHAT CAUSES IT?

Well as per usual with a lot of things FMS, doctors don’t really know what causes it, but their theories work along the lines that the problems lay with pain receptors that send signals to the brain.  These pain receptors sometimes misunderstand what the signals they should be sending to the brain and the result is itchy, dry, cracked - an array of skin conditions1

WHAT TO DO?

  1. Well if your skin is dry anyway, that can make it worse.  So start keeping your skin very well moisturised.
  2. Try a cold pack on the affected areas to cool them.
  3. Talk to your doctor, perhaps some other prescription cream can be suggested.
